The Nishi development in Canberra, designed by March Studio, became widely recognized for its use of reclaimed timber as an architectural and spatial element.
One of the project’s most distinctive features is the Grand Stair installation, composed of hundreds of suspended timber members arranged into a three-dimensional spatial field. Rather than functioning solely as decoration, the structure contributes to wayfinding, atmosphere and the overall identity of the interior.
At the time, projects such as Nishi attracted significant attention within the computational and parametric design community, demonstrating how digital design methods could be used not only to generate form but also to organize large numbers of unique components into a coherent architectural system.
More than a decade later, the project remains a notable example of data-driven architectural fabrication and material-driven spatial design.
